With hundreds of thousands of good fonts to chose from, it is sometimes quite a difficult task to chose that special font. Since the file system of present day computers have a very real limit to how many files can be placed in a single folder, Symbiotic Design tries to never have more than 500-600 font files installed at any one time.

This makes it extremely difficult to preview or find that special font at certain times. Though there are many font oriented web sites (both freeware and commercial), these sites usually do not even include a halfway decent representation of the full character set. Apparently, this is too much work for freeware font sites and commercial font sites whom are fearful that you will use the image to produce what you need (of course, it's way too much work and not worth the time). Therefore, searching for and downloading a particular font can wind-up a real struggle when you don't even get a complete character set. Especially for a designer, a full font set is a major priority.

The freeware font sites are also notorious for pop-up advertisements, and I am just plain sick of these.

Furthermore, many font web sites do not even mention the author and/or publisher, even though it's readily available information. font-Journal will attempt to include a link to each if available, or at least one of these sources.

Therefore, we are in the process of creating an online catalog of commercial, shareware, freeware and public domain fonts to help ease our own font searches. Not all of these fonts will be quality fonts. Many might not even have a full character set. Some may not include anything other than alphabetic characters with no numbers or any other characters. Others might include a widely over spaced space character. Some may only be missing the standard ©,™ or monetary symbols. But a designer needs to quickly reference what is available to him. Fonts are an extremely important peice of even the simplest layout composition. They can also be the very soul of a Trademark.

Based on these facts, it's pretty clear why I, as a professional logo/graphic/web/ad designer and typographer, have to setup a catalog of fonts for myself. Since there is no reason not to share this information with the rest of the world, we do so in hopes that we will make a contribution to the online community. This way our clientele can make more informed decisions, other designers, freelancers, students and educators will have a better font catalog which is pop-up hassle-free. Furthermore, we are not associated with any one font publishing company, we simply enjoy what we can find. We hope that this catalog will grow into a valuable tool in the future.

Note that development of the font-Journal catalog will be a long process, but I am dedicated to making this a reality. Unfortunately, because this is a free site, I can only devote my spare time to this project. Currently this font catalog has only started. If someone would be interested in sponsoring this site I could spend alot more time on this project. Any interested party should not hesitate to contact me at one of the contact addresses listed below.

Current progess:

  • Fonts cataloged: 107 (fonts starting with A-E).
  • Character previews (font-Briefs) available for fonts A-D when clicking on the word "Journal" (minus 6 missing briefs).
  • Images and alt tags applied to fonts A & B.

To Do:

  • Add current library of font preview images (500 ready to go at the moment).
  • Recreate and add missing font-Brief images.
  • Update current font-Brief images to the new character set.
  • Add license status (commercial/shareware/giftware/freeware/public_domain font).
  • Add credit for and links to author/publisher/distributor/download website or email.
  • Add current available selection of redistributable (ie: public domain, freeware & redistributable shareware) fonts to the Symbiotic Design ftp servers and link to them from here (download links will also be platform dependent).
  • Add even more fonts and previews!
  • Move to a commercial server.
  • Add all font names, images and data to a searchable database and develop an easy to use search application.

If you are a font designer or publisher (whether commercial, shareware, freeware, or public domain) and would like to be included in the font-Journal, we would greatly appreciate your contribution! For complete details, see the font-Journal™ Contribution Page.
