Playfair is a transitional design. From the time of enlightenment in the late 18th century, the broad nib quills were replaced by pointed steel pens. This influenced typographical letterforms to become increasingly detached from the written ones. Developments in printing technology, ink, and paper making, made it possible to print letterforms of high contrast and delicate hairlines.<br />

This design lends itself to this period, and while it is not a revival of any particular design, it takes influence from the designs of printer and typeface designer John Baskerville, the punchcutter William Martin’s typeface for the ‘Boydell Shakspeare’ (sic) edition, and from the ‘Scotch Roman’ designs that followed thereafter.<br />

As the name indicates, Playfair Display is well suited for titling and headlines. It has an extra large x-height and short descenders. It can be set with no leading if space is tight, for instance in news headlines, or for stylistic effect in titles. Capitals are extra short, and only very slightly heavier than the lowercase characters. This helps achieve a more even typographical color when typesetting proper nouns and initialisms. Languages, like German, where nouns are capitalized, particularly benefit from this lower contrast between lower and upper case glyphs. In German, with its many capitalized words, and in other European languages that use many diacritical characters, it is advised to use more leading.<br />

Being a transitional design, stylistically Playfair can accompany Georgia, where Georgia is used for body text.<br />

Playfair's downloaded font files include a full set of small caps, common ligatures, and discretionary ligatures. For Polish, a set of alternate diacritical characters designed with ‘kreska’s are included. All European languages using the Latin writing system are supported. A set of eight arrow devices are also included.<br />

Be sure to submit any font you might create or legally modify that we could use here. Any font that has a complete letterset (A-Z, a-z, 0-9 &+~!@#$%^&*()_=-`"':;<>?/|\[{}],.) that is freely distributable would be greatly apprectiated, especially if it is OK for commercial use.  We also love fonts that can be used as web fonts.  Be sure to use a unicode letterset when you save your work or the font simply won't display right here at Font-Journal. Font-Journal is a cataloged archive of freeware and shareware fonts that I maintain for my small business, start-up and freelancing clients.  I try to collect PC truetype freeware fonts that can be used for commercial purposes, and shareware fonts that can be used for commercial purposes upon registration and/or payment of the shareware fee. I started out as an motorcycle racer and mechanic.  That didn't work out and I never got in a race car as planned.  I wound-up as an illustrator, animator, doing some programming and tech support.  Plus I have always been amatuer artist, photographer and videographer.  I was designing logos, posters and graphics in college with Illustrator and Photoshop, and wound-up making a website portfolio just afterwards.  A few people liked it and I wound-up as a freelance web design studio.  Then I expanded into web hosting, then domain name registrations and servers, offering a complete set of webmaster tools as Domain Hostmaster.  I then added the Domainance store in an effort to keep .name registrations and transfers available when our vendor dropped it.  Site Domains has been added to ensure the best deals between all 3 registrars.<br />

Nowadays, I am just trying to corner a peice of the domain name registration and website hosting space, offering more for less than most with better customer/technical support.  Professional domainers, designers, developers, optimizers and webmasters do like how I keep prices as low as possible and that I add my expertise and value where I can.
