Brian James -A free heavy bold font family by Dieter Steffmann

Brian James is a heavy bold serif font family by Dieter Staffmann consisting of the fonts Brian James Condensed (v. 1.34) and Brian James Contour (v. 1.34). This font family can be used commercially, even as a web font (#webfont), as long as it isn't modified and no derivate fonts are created from it.
The contour font version has a thin outline around each character, otherwise the characters would seem identical.
I only found the Postscript Type 1 font in Windows format on Dieter Steffmann's official font catalog, so ince the free font license does allow for converting the font to other formats, I did just that. I used that one to create the Linux Type 1 version, as well as an OpenType version using the TypeTool3 app in Windows. I then used the OpenType version I had generated and created the Web Open Font Format (WOFF & WOFF2) versions using FontCreator.
This is a free font family (never to be sold without the author's permission) created by Typographer Mediengestaltung in 2001. This font is OK for commercial use, even as a web font. No derivatives are allowed.
Note that Dieter Steffmann once went under the brand, "Typographer Mediengestaltung", as sometimes the Copyright for his fonts may reflect, but this is still Dieter Steffmann and his typography business brand. You can usually find his business logo in each font, as well.
A FREE FONT
The authoring artist, Dieter Steffmann, has very little restrictions on the use of his free fonts (so, personal/commercial/charity work is OK, and you may use it as a web font {#webfont}, too), EXCEPT that he maintains his full Copyright worldwide, and therefore this font should not be modified or otherwise used to create a derivative font, and that this font should never be sold. The font or fonts in this archive is/are offered 'as is' without any warranty. This has been a quick synopsis on authorized use, more info is given under the DETAILS section, below.
ARCHIVE ORIGINATION:
Dieter Steffmann's official catalog included the Postscript Type 1 font files (*.afm, *.pfb, & *.pfm) for Windows, as well as the TrueType version, both of these font formats are included in this distribution archive.
I have also converted both fonts into the included font formats:

Add the appropriate extension to collect all three of the Type 1 font files for Windows, or for the Linux/Unix/ASCII versions.
However, please note that the OpenType (.otf) versions do not provide any modifications for OpenType features (such as ligature or special letter combination instructions), as creating them would be illegal under the scope of this Free Font license. An OpenType font also requires more memory and storage, so since the .otf version wouldn't offer anything extra or special, other than possibly allowing ClearText rendering in Windows computers at lower resolutions. So, just take that into account when selecting the right font format for your application. The OpenType format is included as I had to make them anyway in order to generate the WOFF versions in FontCreator.
Also of note is the fact that the TrueType font format is used widely on the web as another acceptable web font format. The WOFF versions are included for those that prefer it as a web standard.
The original GIF of the style preview sample image was converted to a PNG image and has been included, along with new preview images at a larger font size for each font, to show-off more of the detail of each of these fonts. I also grabbed a screenshot of each included font style to show all of the known characters (as displayed in TypeTool3).
A 'License.txt' text file document has been added to allow easy lookup of the authorized use of this font.
The new characters preview images and this updated documentation were created by Doug Peters of Symbiotic Design for Font-Journal. These fonts have been checked and validated as the most recent known available versions (as of July 2nd, 2022).

Note however, that Mr. Steffmann created a large volume of free fonts (over 600). I have much to do to include and document each one of his fonts (both the ones I will add and the older ones that have previously been archived before I took over the database and started documenting each new archive).
Perhaps Dieter Steffmann didn't include documentation in his distribution archives because he made them freely available to the public without much restriction on regular use, as the license was usually specified on the download page. But then the license gets separated from the downloaded archive. I, as a designer myself, like to retain proof that a free font I downloaded is as such (a free font along with its documented conditions of use). It also helps me easily lookup the license and remind myself that I cannot use this font as a basis for another (create a derivative font). This is the reason for Font-Journal.
