"Blackletter" - Free Gothic Font Family by Dieter Steffman

The 'Blackletter' family includes Blackletter Extrabold and Blackletter Shadow. This is a free gothic blackletter font & web font (#webfont) family by Dieter Steffmann. Commercial use is OK, but no derivaties are allowed.

Blackletter Extrabold appears to be the initial release and I have not seen a newer or older version. It was created with Macromedia Fontographer 4.1. Blackletter Shadow appears to be the same, and reports that it version 1.000.

There are several different font formats provided for this font family. Both the TrueType (*.ttf) font files and the Postscript Type 1 font files were downloaded directly from the official Dieter Steffmann archive, but I have included a conversion to OpenType (*.otf) and to the Web Open Font Format (.woff & *.woff2) files, all made using the Type 1 Postscript font files.

This is a free font family (never to be sold) created by Typographer Mediengestaltung in 2000, and then redesigned and rereleased for public use by Dieter Steffmann Typography some time later. This font is OK for commercial use, even as a web font. No derivatives are allowed.

Note that Dieter Steffmann once went under the brand, "Typographer Mediengestaltung", as sometimes the Copyright for his fonts may reflect, but this is still Dieter Steffmann and his typography business brand. You can usually find his business logo in each font, as well.

The authoring artist, Dieter Steffmann, has very little restrictions on the use of his free fonts (so, personal/commercial/charity work is OK, and you may use it as a web font {#webfont}, too), EXCEPT that he maintains his full Copyright worldwide, and therefore this font should not be modified or otherwise used to create a derivative font, and that this font should never be sold. The font or fonts in this archive is/are offered 'as is' without any warranty. This has been a quick synopsis on authorized use, more info is given under the DETAILS section, below.

I consider this font to be a Germanic take on the Gothic Blackletter font found in medieval manuscripts.

The original archive downloaded from Dieter Steffmann's official font archive included the TrueType font format (the filenames with the *.ttf file extension) in this distribution archive. This is the version I used to create the WOFF versions (*.woff & *.woff2). The original archive downloaded from Dieter Steffmann's official font archive also included the Postscript Type 1 font format (the filenames ending in *.pfm, *pfb, & *.afm file extensions, altogether as a whole,) in this distribution archive. The Postscript Type 1 version is the font format I used to create the OTF version (*.otf). However, the .oft version does not provide any modifications for OpenType features as that is illegal under the scope of this license. It would also require more memory and storage and wouldn't offer anything extra or special, other than possibly allowing ClearText rendering in Windows computers with lower resolutions. So, just take that into account when selecting the right font format for your application.

The original GIF of the style preview samples has been included along with a new preview image showing off more of the detail of this blackletter font.

The font license has also been updated from 'Free for Personal Use' to Free (and resides in the 'Free & Freeware' category), now in Font-Journal. A license.txt text file document has been added to allow easy lookup of the authorized use of this font.

The new characters preview image and this updated documentation were created by Doug Peters of Symbiotic Design for Font-Journal. The fonts have been checked and validated as the most recent known available versions (as of Memorial Day, May, 2022).

This text document has been created specifically for distribution with this font archive as a factual document to protect all parties. Any updates to this font or its distribution archive can be found at the dedicated Font-Journal URL for this distribution archive given below:

Please note that Dieter Steffmann has a great many free downloadable typefaces available at Font-Journal. To view all of his fonts that I have added to the font repository so far you can search his name (or use the URL below):

Note however, that Mr. Steffmann created a large volume of free fonts (over 600). I have much to do to include and document each one of his fonts (both the ones I will add and the older ones that have previously been archived before I took over the database and started documenting each new archive).

Perhaps Dieter Steffmann didn't include documentation in his distribution archives because he made them freely available to the public without much restriction on regular use, as the license was usually specified on the download page. But then the license gets separated from the downloaded archive. I, as a designer myself, like to retain proof that a free font I downloaded is as such (a free font along with its documented conditions of use). It also helps me easily lookup the license and remind myself that I cannot use this font as a basis for another (create a derivative font). This is the reason for Font-Journal.

Dieter Steffman
Is a widely talented, retired typographer living in Duetschland (AKA: Germany). Specifically, he lives in the township of Kreuztal in the Siegerland region of DE (DE is the country code abbreviation for Germany). He started computing on the Amiga (as did I). He currently has some health concerns that he shares on his Wordpress blog. He enjoys web administration, photography and hiking, now. He also posts some great photos. Dieter is also quite active on Twitter and maybe Facebook. Dieter Steffman's business alias is "Typographer Mediengestaltung" and he created hundreds of fonts between 2000-2013 that are now available free.

FJ, Me and My Stuff...
Font-Journal is a free cataloged font repository website trying to find, journal and archive the very best in freeware or shareware fonts and web fonts, especially if they are authorized for commercial use.

If Font-Journal.com generated an income I could do more, such as hire and train a staff to help catalog, review and give a quick overview of each font, much faster. If you would like to domnate to support the website, go to:

Font-Journal is sponsored by two websites I own, promote & administrate; Domain Hostmaster (for Domain Name Registration & Transfers, Managed Wordpress & Webmaster Tools) & HD Web Hosting (Linux Apache Genuine Cloud Hosting. Heavy Duty Web Hosting for High Trafficked, High-Definition, Business Websites).

I also design fonts myself. I am setting up LastNational.com to feature some of the fonts I have created, but as of this writing & updating this archive, I'm still working on that website updated. Still, you can find most of them on my Font-Journal.com font repository, if you look me up:
